Description:
This course provides MSPPM and other students with an extensive
examination of topics crucial to the understanding of International
Politics and Policies.
The central purposes of the course are:
- To provide an understanding of the way in which the American
Foreign Policy system works. Special attention will be given to the
foreign policy process, the relations between politics and
policies, and the difficulties involved in the policy making
process. The course will combine the study of basic principles of
international politics, models of policymaking, and the analysis of
critical decisions made by the U. S. government since the end of
World War II. The case studies will focus on major economic and
political/military decisions.
- To develop skills that will be required in any job concerned
with international affairs. Those skills include being able to
analyze a problem; giving an effective presentation of the
material; writing a research paper and writing a policy paper.
Students will also be exposed to basic negotiations skills.
- To know the imperatives, pressures and ethical dilemmas
involved in professional service, and to adopt and practice the
values and behavior associated with professionalism.
- To be sensitive to cultural issues.
- To develop a critical approach to the material.
