Capstone Course – Prerequisites:  90-710 Applied Economic Analysis, 90-711 Empirical Methods for Public Policy and Management, and 90-714 Policy and Politics in American Institutions or 90-713 Policy and Politics an International Perspective

Description:
This course is designed to teach students practical techniques for analyzing public policy problems and developing effective solutions to them. Students will learn a series of inter-related methods of policy analysis and gain experience in analyzing realistic policy cases using those methods. Students completing the course will have a good understanding of how and when policy issues become important, and of how policy initiatives are developed, analyzed, presented, implemented, evaluated, and terminated. Students will gain an improved ability to assess the nature and magnitude of policy problems, to develop and evaluate creative alternatives for addressing those problems, and to effectively communicate findings and recommendations to decision-makers. Class sessions are very interactive, using a combination of lecture and case-based discussion. Cases will cover a wide range of domestic policy issues, including criminal justice, economic development, education, environmental protection, health care, and human services.
