90-731, Management Methods: Application through Case Study
12 units
Prerequisites: None
Delivery Format: On-Campus
Description: This course focuses on methods that managers can use to improve organizational performance. The methods to be examined include strategic planning, reengineering, benchmarking, privatization, team management, and total quality management. The focus during the first part of the course is on learning about the methods and examining how those methods have been used. Thus, the first part of the course examines each of the methods and explores public sector organizations where these methods have been used. The focus during the second part of the course is on sharpening one's sense of when to use one method rather than another. Consequently, during the second part of the course a series of organizational situations is presented where problems exist or performance is lagging but where the managers or consultants have not told you what they would do. Your task will be to identify the problem and determine how to deal with it. In each case, part of the work will be done individually and part will rely on working through the problem with others. The purpose of the course as a whole is for you to develop skill in learning to recognize the nature of the organizational problem and to identify appropriate methods to enhance organizational performance.
