Sample Syllabus

Description:
The objective of this course is to enable students to understand the key role that pro-active, informed and committed human resource management can and should play in organizations achieving their tactical and strategic goals. The full scope of human resources activities is examined including: employee selection, training and development, performance management, compensation and benefits, labor and employee relations, safety and wellness, international HR, HR information (HRIS) and HR audit systems.

Emphasis is placed on students developing the analytical skills to formulate and execute organizational policy in all issues regarding human capital. Students learn to recognize and act on human resource problems and opportunities. They also learn how to apply principles of human resource management to arrive at cost-effective solutions to short and long term challenges encountered by those they serve within their organizations.

Differences in public and private sector approaches and unionized versus non-unionized settings are explored. Guest lecturers with expertise in various Human Resource areas are included at times.
