All new Heinz College students enrolling for classes should carefully review all of the information on this page prior to attending orientation. Even if you have already taken classes at Carnegie Mellon or you work at the university, please review this information to make sure you are familiar with it as some of it is unique to Heinz College.
You will receive two computer accounts essential to your educational experience and academic success:

| students who reported a social security # within their admission application | The first EIGHT digits only (out of nine) of your SSN will serve as your initial password for both accounts. |
| Students who did not report a social security # within their admission application | You will receive a separate email message from our office that will include your student ID number, as assigned by the university. | Activate & Secure your Heinz & Andrew accounts |
For security reasons, you must change your initial/ default password as soon as possible after receiving this email. NOTE: It is your responsibility to keep your accounts secure. Please read more about password security |
Heinz ID - Account Activation |

| When will you use your Heinz.ID? | Your Heinz Account will allow you access to Heinz College resources like Heinz file servers and the Heinz College Master's students directory. You may also be required to enter your Heinz ID when accessing certain software downloads through computing services. |

Andrew ID - Account Activation |

| When will you use your Andrew ID? | Your Andrew ID allows access to campus computing resources like email, web portal, student services and the CMU websites (cmu.edu). The CMU web site includes access to your tuition bill, student account summary and your course schedule via the Hub (Enrollment Services) by visiting: http://www.cmu.edu/hub/. If you click on "Student Information On-Line," it will allow you access to your bill, course schedule (once you have been registered for classes), and other enrollment information. (Please do not make any changes to your first semester schedule until after you have met with your advisor.) |

| Technical Help for Andrew Account | If you ever forget your Andrew password, or are unable to reset your initial password please contact: advisor@andrew.cmu.edu or call 412-268-HELP (412-268-4357) and ask to have your password reset back to its default setting. You may be required to show a photo ID in person. Never tell anyone your password. |
Andrew Email and Account Service
Also available on "My Andrew" is access to your Andrew email account, via the Andrew Webmail link. You can use your User ID and Andrew password to access your account from anywhere you have internet access.
Many instructors will require that you use the online communication tool Blackboard. Once you have your Andrew Account and password, you will have access to Carnegie Mellon's Blackboard. You may reach this through the following link: http://www.cmu.edu/blackboard/ Students having trouble accessing Blackboard may email Blackboard support directly at bb-help@andrew.cmu.edu .
Typically, you will need to use a VPN connection in the following situations:
• You are off campus and need to access a service that is restricted by IP address (e.g., Library licensed resources or databases).
