We pre-register all incoming students for their first semester of classes. This schedule will not be absolute. You will meet with your faculty advisor prior to the first day of the semester to discuss your schedule. The details of your appointment will be emailed to you prior to the week of orientation. You will have the opportunity to adjust your schedule after this meeting. DO NOT MAKE CHANGES to your schedule prior to meeting with your advsor. In an attempt to make changes, you may lose your seat in a required course. Your tentative schedule will be available to view through SIO, Student Information Online by the week of orientation.
Exchange students should view additional information regarding your schedule of classes on the International Exchange Student Page
Full time Heinz students will have the opportunity (and may be required) to take placement exams during the week of orientation which may allow you to place into a higher section of a course or allow you to exempt a required course. Learn more about orientation week exemption exams.
Carnegie Mellon measures coursework in terms of "units" rather the "credits. A full semester long course is typically 12 units (which is equivalent to 3 - 4 credits of graduate work at other universities), and implies that you can expect to devote an average of 12 hours per week to the course. We also offer half-semester long classes, termed a "mini" that is typically worth 6 units. You can still expect to devote an average of 12 hours per week to these courses. A normal course load is from 54 to 66 units. If you wish to exceed 66 units, you must request permission from the Director of your program.

A complete listing of courses offered at Heinz College is available on our various program pages. Course descriptions provide an overview of the materials to be covered in each class. The course content is subject to change, based on the faculty member teaching a particular section of the course.
Please note, students are able to cross-register for courses that are offered by another degree program besides their own with pre-approval from their program director.
