Once You Arrive at the Host Campus

OIE’s Guide: http://www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/oie/settlinginguides/

Photo ID Cards

This card will allow you unlimited access to public transportation in Pittsburgh, student discounts around the city, and access to campus facilities, including the Library, the exercise facilities and any CMU sponsored events. You will need to have your picture taken at the Hub once you arrive on campus for your photo ID to be created. You will have time during orientation week to have your picture taken.

First Day of Orientation

Exchange students must attend new student orientation at OIE (except for US citizens and permanent residents). Details will be provided via email.

Buying Books

In the past, students have expressed an interest in purchasing textbooks prior to their arrival at Carnegie Mellon. We do not recommend that you do this for a number of reasons. First, faculty can change the edition of the textbook they use at the last minute requiring you to purchase a new book once you arrive. Second, we sometimes have different faculty members teaching different sections of the same course. They do not always use the same text.

Student Email Account and Computer Access

Adelaide to Pittsburgh: Your Carnegie Mellon user ID (Andrew ID) will remain the same. If you do not have an Andrew ID, one will be created for you. You will also receive a Heinz College Active Directory ID (Heinz ID). Each ID gives you access to different resources. The lists below outline the services each ID grants:

Andrew ID:
1. Andrew web services like

2. Main Campus Computer Labs
3. Email and calendar (Accessed through the CMU portal)

Heinz ID:
1. Hamburg Hall Computer Clusters (MSPPM only)
2. Print server and printers
