Heinz College students have partnered with the Medical Banking Project to produce a unique academic journal that could help reduce health care costs. Medical banking is a discipline that uses financial methods to reduce costs, increase availability, and simplify the delivery of health care. As a leading organization in the field, the Medical Banking Project is a non-profit that seeks to lower health care costs by researching and facilitating models that optimize banking resources for healthcare.

“As part of our educational program we seek to interact with industry groups like the Medical Banking Project to expose our students to issues that are part of the policy dialogue in health care,” said David Dausey, Sr. Director Health Programs/initiatives at Carnegie Mellon University. “We’re excited to be part of this project, and it offers a good learning experience for our students.”

The students involved will have a chance to contribute to the organization’s premier academic publication, The International Journal of Medical Banking. The student’s work will be featured in the third issue of the journal, which will be distributed at an annual industry meeting in April 2010.

"The journal is documenting the advancement of medical banking as an industry segment and doing this with students makes this annual task fun," said Maureen Turo, President of the Medical Banking Institute. The Medical Banking Project will oversee production of the Journal and work directly with the student team at Heinz College.

The partnership between Heinz College and the Medical Banking Project will prepare the next generation of researchers and leaders in the medical banking field.
