ABOUT THE OTF
The Open Technology Foundation is an association dedicated to helping governments make cost effective and innovative use of open technologies – interoperable technologies based on open standards which offer innovative, cost effective IT solutions.
An intensively collaborative organisation, which provides an effective mechanism for governments to work with the ICT industry and research organisations on issues of shared interest. The Open Technology Foundation maximises the potential for innovative contributions from industry and research organisations, bolstering local research and development opportunities.
The Open Technology Foundation will achieve this by undertaking activities in four streams:
° Information and knowledge sharing
° Resource and solution sharing
° Research
° Working with industry and research organisations to provide consulting and advice
OUR CORE BUSINESS
The OTF is a representative peak reference body for members to undertake activities to support governments in the research, evaluation, trialling and uptake of open technologies. Specifically:
° to assist members in the development of innovative, cooperative and consistent approaches to the adoption of open technologies
° to provide a forum for the exchange of information among members
° to represent its members in international sharing alliances with similar peak open technology bodies in other continents
° to improve access to government markets by small to medium enterprises in the open technology industry
° to partner with research organisations in the development of targeted, vendor agnostic research in the field of information technology

NEWS UPDATE
The OTF launched from Old Parliament House
Many representatives from the government sector, ICT industry and academia of Australia and New Zealand were at Old Parliament House where Senator Kate Lundy launched the OTF with our Chairperson Dr Terry Cutler.

One of the objectives of the OTF is to improve access to government markets by small to medium enterprises in the open technology industry. Companies like Logi-Tech in South Australia who sponsored the launch.

The Open Technology Foundation networks are growing so quickly now as we head towards our launch – from the government sector; from the ICT industry in A & NZ; and from Universities who want to be involved in the research, trials and programs we undertake.

The OTF is now incorporated with a Constitution that allows for government sector jurisdictions from across Australia and New Zealand to be on the organisations Council (Board).
Carnegie Mellon University – Australia is taking a lead role in establishing the OTF by providing resources and infrastructure. Carnegie Mellon University, as a global leader in public policy and information technology management, recognises the benefits of this major initiative.
The project is headed by OTF General Manager Stephen Schmid.
About OTF General Manager Stephen Schmid
Stephen Schmid is General Manager of the Open Technology Foundation (OTF) at Carnegie Mellon University - Australia. Schmid earned his Bachelor of Computer Science from the University of South Australia and his Master of Science in Information and Technology (MSIT) from Carnegie Mellon University – Australia.
Schmid has extensive experience in commercial and public sector environments having worked as a consultant nationally and internationally, and as a public speaker on IT in Australia and New Zealand. Prior to the OTF Schmid was the Director of the SA Government ICT Division.
Schmid is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has successfully patented multiple technology inventions whilst working in the private sector.
Schmid’s current interests include open technologies, social networking, eGovernment and models for co-creation as a means for governments to embark on new challenges.
