Cold Canvassing

Cold Calling is contacting organisations that are not currently advertising but may be interested in employing a person with your skills and expertise. As approximately 80% of positions are filled without advertising, this strategy should not be overlooked.

Steps

1.  Determine Who to Contact

  • Research Organisations that may be of interest to you. You can get information from Directories, Web searches, Alumni Directory, Networking contacts etc.

2.  Research the Organisations you are interested

  • To ensure that they do the sort of work you are interested in
  • To find out what sort of values and beliefs they hold to assist with your application
  • To know who to contact

3.  Create your tools

  • It is particularly important when cold canvassing to ensure that your resume and introduction letter is directed towards the skills and experience the potential employer would be looking for. In particular this is an opportunity to highlight skills that you have, that would be beneficial to them that they may not recognise as yet.

4.  Contact the Organisation

  • To find out who the best person is to speak to
  • Get more information about the prospects
  • Introduce Yourself

5.  Send an email or letter with you resume

  • As per above, ensure that the resume responds to the organisations focus and interests

6.  Follow up

  • •  Unless you follow up your application with a call to the specific person you sent it to, it is not worth doing.

This strategy may not work immediately, but overtime in conjunction with other Job Search techniques should lead to success.
