Internships
A full-time internship, completed during the third semester between the first and second years of the program, will provide Public Policy and Management and Information Technology students with the opportunity to apply the management and technical skills learned during the first two semesters of the program, gain further professional experience and develop a strong context for the last semesters concentration coursework. Students are encouraged to intern in an organization that corresponds to their individual area of interest and career goals. Students in the full-time MSPPM (MS3) programs are required to complete internships in Dec/Jan. Students who are undertaking MSPPM part-time (MS5), it is compulsory and they must do their internship during semesters 3 and 4. Students studying MSIT can do an optional internship after semester 2.
Internship Requirements:
- Fill out and return the Internship Approval Form to the Career Services Office at least two weeks before your internship is due to commence
- Minimum of ten weeks full-time (400 hours) maximum of twelve weeks full-time for MS5 only. MS3 and MSIT are optional in length.
- You are required to apply the skills you have acquired in your first year of study.
- Students should view the Student Internship Guidelines to ensure that all requirements are fulfilled. Employers are urged to view the Guidelines for Internship Supervisors so they're fully aware of their roles and responsibilities.
- To fulfill the internship requirement, you must have your supervisor fill out and return the Internship Evaluation Form to the Career Services Department
- To complete the internship, please sign the Evaluation Form given to you by your Supervisor/Employer
- You will not receive academic credit for your internship, but it will be reflected on your transcript as a course with a Pass or Fail grade.
If you're enrolled in a degree program that requires an internship, you will be responsible for securing a suitable internship. Career Services will assist you in your search through counseling, workshops, and internship opportunity listings in TartanTRAK, the S Drive and on LinkedIn. We strongly encourage you to begin your research and prepare for your internship search in your 2nd semester . Some internship opportunities have application deadlines so by starting your search early, you won't miss out on these potential opportunities. Make sure you schedule in your Career Pathway Counselling session with the Manager of the Careers Department.
