DEFINITION: Con·vo·ca·tion (kon"vo-kA'shun)
n. – “The act of assembling people, especially the members of a college or university.”
Convocation is a regular forum in which students have an opportunity to discuss and learn about a variety of issues. Sessions feature guest speakers, including those who lead organisations, analyse and develop policy as well as those who innovate in the fields of Information Technology and Public Policy and Management. Friday 6 July On 18 September 2008, the Hon Chris Bowen MP, announced the appointment of Mr Ali Noroozi as the new Inspector‑General of Taxation for a term of five years. Mr Noroozi is a qualified engineer and lawyer. He also has a Masters of Laws degree in taxation from the University of Sydney.
Prior to becoming the Inspector-General of Taxation, he had gained over 15 years experience in Australian and International taxation. He has worked for approximately 12 years at major accounting and law firms, namely: Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Ernst & Young, Minter Ellison and Linklaters. He has also worked for almost 5 years as the Tax Counsel at the Institute of Chartered Accountants. |

Reaching Goals" Presented by former South Australian Premier, the Honorable Mike Rann Mike Rann was Premier of South Australia for nearly a decade and Labor Party leader for a record 17 years. He held many ministerial portfolios at Cabinet level including Minister for Economic Development, Minister for Social Inclusion, and Minister for the Arts and was one of the world's first Climate Change Ministers. Mr Rann was National President of the Australian Labor Party during the Prime Ministership of Kevin Rudd. He was the inaugural Chair of the Council of the Australian Federation representing all States and Territories.
Since retiring Mr Rann has accepted an invitation by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, to join the International Leadership Council of the Climate Group. He has also accepted several academic appointments in Australia and overseas. He has been honoured by the governments of New Zealand, Poland and Greece. |

Dr Zaplin has two nationally recognised textbooks in criminal justice and numerous book chapters related to leadership development. She holds a DPA, MPA, MA, and BA. Wednesday 23 February 2011 Mr G. Edward DeSeve, Special Adviser to President Obama Mr G. Edward DeSeve presented a convocation address titled 'Managing in a Crisis'. In March 2009, US President Barack Obama announced that G. Edward DeSeve, would coordinate efforts at the Office of Management and Budget to implement the economic stimulus package to drive the U.S. Economy out of the GFC. In this position, DeSeve served as a special adviser to President Obama and assistant to Vice President Joe Biden, focused on managing interagency efforts to address provisions of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. That work, the White House said, would complement oversight efforts led by Earl Devaney, head of the Recovery Act Accountability and Transparency Board. Previously Edward served as Managing Director of Merrill Lynch Capital Markets and was a Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania; Senior Fellow at the University of Maryland and CEO of Strategy and Solution Partners. He was deputy director for management at OMB during the latter part of President Clinton's term in office. During DeSeve's tenure, he was a key player in coordinating the federal response to the Y2K computer issue. Before serving at OMB, DeSeve was the chief financial officer at the Department of Housing and Urban Development from 1993 to 1994. Prior to that, he worked in the financial services industry in the private sector. DeSeve also has worked for the city of Philadelphia and as a special assistant to Pennsylvania Gov. Robert Casey. |

Mr Kevin G Osborn presented a convocation address titled 'Better Leadership in Business'. Mr Osborn chairs the Adelaide Desalination Plant Steering Committee (ADPSC) which advises the Government on the construction of a 100 gig litre reverse osmosis desalination plant near Adelaide. Mr Osborn also serves as Deputy Chairman of the Economic Development Board of South Australia. Until late 2009 Ms Osborn was Deputy Chairman of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank. He has had a 20-year executive career in international financial markets and has held various global senior management positions with Bank One (now part of J P Morgan Chase).
He is currently a Foundation Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Fellow Professional of the National Institute of Accountants and a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors in Canada. Tuesday 9 November 2010 Mr Larry Cooley, MSI's President, is a specialist in the fields of strategic management, public sector performance, and organisational development. Mr Cooley addressed the Carnegie Mellon community on his experiences with foreign assistance. Mr Cooley has served as advisor to cabinet and sub-cabinet officials in a variety of Federal Agencies and more than a dozen foreign countries. Mr Cooley is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration, served for 15 years as Chairperson of the Development Management Network of the American Society of Public Administration, and received that organization’s National Award for Training Excellence. Mr Cooley directed for 11 years the Implementing Policy Change program that assisted governments around the world to manage various aspects of policy change and currently oversees a four-year project helping to rebuild public administration in Iraq’s civilian ministries. Before founding MSI in 1981, Mr. Cooley worked briefly at the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme, at Practical Concepts Incorporated, and as Peace Corps Volunteer. He has served as an Adjunct Professor at George Washington University and American University and holds an MA in Economics from Columbia University, an MPA in Public Policy from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University, and a M. Phil. in Management from the Cranfield School of Management in the UK.
Founded in 1981, MSI is a global international development firm providing specialized short- and long-term technical assistance. Since its founding, the firm has grown in size and scope, with over 100 projects under management worldwide. It has significantly expanded its technical expertise to include implementation of a range of analytical and field projects in democracy and governance, economic growth, organizational capacity building, education, and natural resource management. Thursday 21 October 2010 Meredith A. Newman is Professor and Chair of the Department of Public Administration at Florida International University. Prior to her career in academia, Newman served with the Australian Foreign Service (in France and Vietnam), the U.S. Department of State (in Senegal, Malaysia and Singapore), and the World Bank. Professor Newman is widely published in the areas of public management, human resources and gender, and the emotive aspects of work. She is the recipient of several awards, including the Editors’ Choice Award, Public Administration Review.
Her book entitled, Emotional Labor: Putting the Service in Public Service (Mary Guy and Sharon Mastracci, co-authors) is the recipient of three Best Book awards. Newman is an Associate Editor of Review of Public Personnel Administration; past Chair of the Commission on Peer Review and Accreditation, National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration; President of the American Society for Public Administration; and a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. |

Wednesday 4 August 2010 Dr Jack C Chow served in pioneering roles in public service and global health diplomacy. He was the first Assistant Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. Dr Chow held the rank of ambassador as the Special Representative of the U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Global HIV/AIDS and as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Health and Science, the first U.S. diplomat of ambassador rank appointed to a public health mission. In the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks, Dr Chow led American diplomatic efforts in the establishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and in countering global infectious diseases, including SARS. Through extensive global health diplomacy efforts, he catalysed a historic contribution of $100 million by the Canadian Government and major contributions by several governments, in support of WHO’s HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention campaign for developing countries. Dr Chow authored the breakthrough article "Health and International Security” in the Washington Quarterly and has appeared in numerous major media venues. |

Opportunity International Australia is a non-profit organisation which uses a business approach to solve the problem of poverty. They provide people living in poverty with a small loan (microfinance) to help them start, or grow, their own small business. This enables them to earn a regular income so they no longer have to struggle to afford food, clean water, proper shelter or an education for their children. |
