International Politics and Policies

The goal of this course is to examine the foreign policies of the main international actors:
The US, China and Russia.
The section on China will focus on the study of the Chinese political and economic
system and its performance in the international arena in the last five years, the section on Russia will focus on oil, the main foreign policy tool of Russian governments since the
late 19th century. The section on the US will focus on the main challenges that the Obama
administration is facing in the foreign policy area. The focus will be on relations with
China, Russia, and the Middle East, including Iraq and Afghanistan. In each of these
sections we will examine the main characteristics, goals, and policies of the US as well as the other countries. We will conclude the course by analyzing policies toward Latin
America, Africa and Human Rights issues.
