Counseling Issues in Higher Education
Issues that affect college students are varied: some remain constant and will always present challenges to the campus population. Others evolve based on the nature of the campus and the events of the community. This course is intended to provide the skills to research, identify and understand the issues that affect college students and often require professional intervention. Basic counseling skills will be reviewed, but the primary goal of the class will be to explore the variety of events that impact student success as well as the appropriate responses and procedures in place on campuses. Insight will be gained into how and when to make student referrals, as well as types of student support services and how they differ depending on the nature of the school (large, small, public, private, community, etc.).
