Graduating Students' Checklist
Congratulations on your pending graduation. Since you no longer require access to the campus there are a number of things that you need to return or complete before your graduation day. This guide is available to let you know what happens to your access after you leave Carnegie Mellon. Prior to each graduation you will be contacted by Diane Ovens to organise an Exit Interview at which many of the topics listed below will be discussed. However this is your opportunity to ask question and seek clarification about what needs to be done.
Please register as a Carnegie Mellon Alumni
As a Carnegie Mellon Alumni it is suggested that you register on the alumni page so that you can:
- Keep up to date with what is happening at Carnegie Mellon
- Receive email forwarding of your current Andrew email account
- Find and keep in touch with other Carnegie Mellon graduates
- Have access to career networking opportunities
- Receive career advice from career services
Registration is free for all graduating Carnegie Mellon Students anytime at www.cmu.edu/alumni.

Access Cards
After your graduation day access to the building will only be available Business Hours (Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm). Your access card will no longer be valid so you will not be allowed access to the building with your access card during or after hours. Please return the card to either Diane Ovens or a member of the IT team so it can be re-issued to incoming students. If you require access to the building after hours you will need to complete an application for extended use and return it to Diane Ovens sighting valid reasons why you still require access. The application will be considered by the university and the user may then be or not be granted access afterhours.
Employment Information
Heinz College Career Services help students and alumni develop a personalised career plan, employer research strategies and job placement opportunities. Career services assists Alumni through providing continual career support during their study and after graduation. Job opportunities, invitations to our Convocations and various Guest Speaker events, are emailed to your CMU Andrew email account or CMU Alumni account. All alumni are encouraged to register with Carnegie Mellon Alumnito also ensure that these emails from Career Services are received. If you have any further questions, please contact the Career Services Manager - Sherry Hearn and make sure that you regularly check the career services section on the website.
Email Accounts
Your Andrew email account with Carnegie Mellon will expired 90 days after graduating. Alumni can request to forward their email accounts when you register with CMU Alumni at www.cmu.edu/alumni. Information about alumni email forwarding can be found at www.cmu.edu/computing.email.alumni.html.
Faculty References
If you would like a faculty member to act as a referee or to write a reference for your resume please contact Diane Ovens who will forward you the form with instructions.
IT Hardware
Any IT items need to be returned to the IT department before your graduation day. Any items not returned will be recorded by IT staff and fines may be imposed. If you require access to an item after graduation, please complete an application for extended use and return it to Diane Ovens sighting valid reasons why you still require the item. The application will be considered by the university.
Library Items
All library items need to be returned to the library during operating hours (Monday – Friday 12pm-1pm and 5pm – 6pm) before your graduation day. Any items not returned will be recorded by library staff and fines may be imposed. If you require access to an item after graduation,please complete an application for extended use and return it to Diane Ovens sighting valid reasons why you still require the item. The application will be considered by the university.
Lockers/Mailboxes
After graduation your locker will be unavailable. Please make sure you clean your locker out before graduation day so it can be reassigned to incoming students. If you require further use of a locker, please complete an application for extended use and return it to Diane Ovens citing valid reasons why you still require the locker. The application will be considered by the university. Any locker not cleaned out after graduation day and that has not negotiated longer use will be cleaned out by university staff and contents thrown away.
Project Servers
All project servers will be decommissioned 90 days after students graduate. If you require further access to a server please complete an application for extended use and return to Diane Ovens for University consideration. Please note that only faculty approved reasons for extension will be considered.
Network Access
Your username and password access to the wireless network and cluster PC’s will no longer be available after graduation. You will also no longer have VPN access to the network from home. If you require access to an the network after graduation, please complete an application for extended use and return it to Diane Ovens sighting valid reasons why you still require the access. The application will be considered by the university.
Software
After your graduation day you are required to remove any Carnegie Mellon supplied software from your personal machines. This is a legal requirement since the license only allows the software to be used during your studies here in Adelaide. This includes:
- Microsoft Office
- Trend Antivirus Software.
A free replacement for Microsoft Office that is Open Office and a free replacement for trend that is AVG. Both of these are available to students in S:\Tools for your Laptop\Free Licensing. Please note that Cisco VPN client doesn't have to be removed from your machine but you will no longer be able to access the CMU network from home.
MSIT students that have already installed a Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Visio or Microsoft Project have ownership of those products so they do not have to remove them. Please note that Microsoft Office does not fall under that agreement.
Student ID Cards
ID Cards are only valid within Australia. They expire 60 days after a student has graduated. There are no exceptions to this.
Transcripts/Whiteprints
Ordering transcripts can be done through enrolment services at www.cmu.edu/hub/transcripts.html. A fee will apply. Alternatively students may obtain an unofficial transcript equivalent (called a whiteprint) from Diane Ovens. These can be printed upon request at no charge although they are not embossed with the Carnegie Mellon stamp.
