Life in Adelaide

“Adelaide has been voted one of the most liveable and eco-friendly cities in the world*. It is also Australia’s most affordable city to live in. The New Yorker magazine once referred to Adelaide as “the last well-planned metropolis on earth” - planned on a square mile grid with wide streets, central squares and more than 900 hectares of parklands (almost 50 per cent of the city).”

About Adelaide

Adelaide, the capital of South Australia and the fifth largest city in the country is home to a culturally diverse population of 1.2 million people, including 230,000 students.

The city is renowned for its vibrant culture and relaxed lifestyle and has many attractions including 30 kilometres of beautiful beaches, the Adelaide Central Markets, Adelaide Zoo, Rundle Mall shopping strip, numerous cultural venues, famous restaurants, vibrant nightlife, the South Australian Museum, the Art Gallery of SA, Adelaide Botanic Gardens and the Adelaide Hills and wine region – just to name a few. There is also plenty to explore outside the city, including salt lakes, mountain ranges, outback deserts and the magnificent Kangaroo Island, all within easy reach.

Adelaide’s European heritage is evident in the many restored Victorian and Edwardian buildings scattered through the city including the Torrens Building – home to Carnegie Mellon University – Australia and the international university precinct.

South Australia hosts more than 500 festivals annually including the Festival of Ideas, the Adelaide Festival of Arts and the Fringe Festival, as well as a number of major sporting events including the Clipsal 500 and Tour Down Under.

Accommodation options for students in Adelaide are also excellent and affordable, and most is available in the heart of the city, just minutes away from the Carnegie Mellon University – Australia campus.
