Biography

Dr. Barbara K. Mistick is the Distinguished Service Professor of Entrepreneurship & Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University's H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management. Dr. Mistick also holds a joint appointment with Carnegie Mellon University's College of Arts and Sciences School of Design. In addition, Dr. Mistick is Director of the Girls Math & Science Partnership (GMSP), a unique public/private work force development collaboration between Fred Rogers' Family Communication Inc., Carnegie Mellon University and The University of Pittsburgh. The GMSP focus is to expand informal learning opportunities for girls and boys to explore entrepreneurship, math and science in the Western Pennsylvania region. The projects of the Girls, Math & Science Partnership include other community partners: The Heinz Endowments, Alcoa Foundation, local business, government and educational organizations, and the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Mistick formerly served as the Director of The National Education Center for Women in Business (NECWB) at Seton Hill University and was Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship in the Department of Management. Prior to her appointment at Seton Hill, she was Founder and President of Mobility Inc.; General Manager of Western Pennsylvania, Laidlaw Transit; and General Manager of Colonial Taxi & Paratransit Services.

She has over 20 years experience as an entrepreneur, educator and administrator. At Seton Hill, Dr. Mistick facilitated the first state-wide research documenting women's current and potential economic contributions, and developed the NECWB as the premier resource for women's entrepreneurship in Pennsylvania. She has consulted with several Fortune 1000 companies in the development of women's networks and with many United States and International Universities to establish women's business centers. She is an active practitioner with over 30 field-relevant publications and presentations at international practitioner and academic conferences, and has co-authored a book, The Adventure to Entrepreneurship, A Journey to Self Discovery for Young Women. She also served on the Advisory Board for A Leadership Journal: Women in Leadership - Sharing The Vision.

Dr. Mistick's degrees include a B.S. in Business Management from Carlow College, an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Doctorate in Management from Case Western Reserve University. She holds a Certificate in Case Method Teaching from Harvard College and has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Trent, Italy.

Dr. Mistick has served on the U.S. White House Office of Women's Initiatives, Economic Advisory Council. As former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge's appointee, she served on the Pennsylvania Commission for Woman. She has been named one of Pittsburgh's Top 50 Business Leaders by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She is the recipient of numerous recognitions for her advocacy work with women including the US Small Business Administration's Women's Business Advocate Award and the Ernst & Young Supporter of Entrepreneurship Award. She is Past Chairman and President, Board of Trustees, St. Edmund's Academy; and was the recipient of the 2003 Carlow College Women of Spirit Award and the 2003 Vectors Education Award.

Internationally, Dr. Mistick is former Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the International ATHENA Foundation, an international leadership organization dedicated to advancing opportunities for woman throughout the world with programs in over 350 cities in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia; she serves as Mentor for Zayed University, United Arab Emirates; and as a team leader for the GaliLead Project in Israel. Regionally, she serves on the Advisory Council, Women in Leadership, Coro Center for Civic Leadership; Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of America Trillium Council; Board of Directors of the Pittsburgh Opera; and Board of Governors of the Rivers Club.
