Individual Counseling 

A Career Services staff member will provide guidance, advice and information throughout your career search. Your counselor will work with you to tailor a career search that achieves your goals. Staff members are available to meet with you through scheduled appointments, and you can make one through Andrew Calendar. You are required to meet with your counselor at the beginning of each academic year. Typical counseling activities include the following:

Staff Bios

Martin Black, Director, mblack@andrew.cmu.edu
Martin joined the Heinz School in the Summer of 2002 after 20 years of work and study in New York City. As director he works with career services staff to design out-reach to the office’s three main client groups – students, employers and alumni; provides periodic reports and statistics on the Heinz student employment picture; sets the calendar for on and off-campus career events; manages CMU and external partnerships with peer policy schools; and evaluates and builds office resources in response to changing student needs. He advises students interested in careers in public sector consulting and finance, federal government, policy research and international development.

Martin’s graduate studies were in Comparative Literature and German Cultural Studies at New York University. Since then he worked as a graduate student advisor, next for a major New York City development firm, later as the operations manager of a cultural institute, and then for six years as a program director for a number of work-exchange fellowships to Europe – the US State Department funded Congress-Bundestag Young Professional Exchange, an English language Tutor Exchange to Eastern Europe and the Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program for future leaders in public policy, law, business, politics and journalism. Most recently Martin edited an anthology of the works of Nobel Laureate Heinrich Böll.

In December 2005, Jackie Nameth joined the staff of the Heinz School Career Services as an Associate Director and as the Internship Coordinator.  She joined the Heinz School from her position as the Manager of the Regional Internship Center, a program of the Coro Center for Civic Leadership.  Jackie advises students pursuing careers in arts management, non-profit advocacy, non-profit policy and social enterprise. 

A native of Cleveland, Jackie decide to make Pittsburgh her home after completing undergraduate work in Environmental Studies and Communication Arts at Allegheny College.  Prior to Coro, she worked at Friends of the Riverfront, the Clean Air Conservancy and interned at the Center for Economic and Environmental Development and the US Department of Agriculture – Rural Development Division.  Most recently, Jackie was honored as one of Pittsburgh Magazine’s “40 Under 40” award winners.

Will joined the Heinz School Career Services staff in June 2007 as an Associate Director and as the Career Services Events Coordinator. A graduate of Lafayette College with an Economics and Business degree, Will began his career in the Undergraduate Admissions office at Carnegie Mellon. Previously he had engagements with The College Board and the Lehigh Valley Hospital. Most recently, Will was the manager of the NBC Page Program in New York City advising Pages on career opportunities, networking and interviewing techniques.
 
Will advises students pursuing careers in Healthcare Policy & Management, Entertainment Industry, State & Local Government and Economic/Business/Community Development. Originally from the Philadelphia area, he is excited to be back in Pittsburgh and working with Heinz students.

Gerald Tang joined the Heinz School Career Service Staff in July 2006. Currently he is pursuing his Master degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education at IUP. He graduated from Binghamton University with a BS in Human Development while he worked at several offices such as Undergraduate Admissions, Orientation, Career Development Center, Leadership Center and Residential Life. With his experiences growing up in Hong Kong, he is hoping to bring in different ideas to enhance the career services. He is very excited to meet all of you. He assists with organizing and presenting workshops, and researching and promoting fellowship and internship opportunities.

Kurt Sterling joined the Heinz School Career Services Staff in June 2007. Currently he is working on his Master in Student Affairs in Higher Education at IUP while working at Heinz as a part time Graduate Assistant/Career Advisor. He graduated from Slippery Rock University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing. His undergraduate experiences include Student Government, Admissions, and Residence Life. He is excited to meet and advise students, as well as advise the Internship Opportunity Fund and coordinate eClips, the weekly Career Services job posting newsletter, and the Career Services Blog.
