Internship Search
A full-time internship, completed during the summer between the first and second years of the program, will provide MAM and MSPPM students with the opportunity to apply the management skills learned during the first year of the program, gain further professional experience and develop a strong context for the second-year concentration coursework. Students are encouraged to intern in an organization that corresponds to their individual area of interest and career goals.
Internship Requirements
- All students must fill out and return the Internship Approval Form to the Career Services Office by April 15 of each year
- Minimum of seven weeks full-time (280 hours)
- Require students to apply the skills they have acquired in their first year of study
- Include work that is appropriate for graduate level students and be of importance to the organization
- Students should view the Student Internship Guidelines to ensure that all requirements are fulfilled. Also, employers are urged to view the Guidelines for Internship Supervisors so they are fully aware of their roles and responsibilities in the internship process
- To Fulfill the internship requirement, students must have their supervisor fill out and return the Internship Evaluation Form to the Career Services Office by August 31 of each year
- To complete their internship, all students must fill out the Internship Survey by August 31 of each year (the Internship Survey is administered online by the Career Services Staff)
If you are enrolled in a degree program that requires an internship or if you will voluntarily complete an internship, the Career Services Office will assist you in your search. We strongly encourage you to begin your research and to prepare for a summer internship search in the fall. Some internship opportunities have application deadlines in the fall; by starting your search early, you won't miss out on these potential opportunities. Most students do not get their internships through on-campus recruiting, so your interviews are generally off-campus. Career Services will assist you with your internship search, but keep in mind that we do not match students with employers; obtaining an internship is your responsibility.
We encourage you to take the following steps to ensure a successful internship outcome:
- Meet with your career advisor to discuss your interests and to organize your internship search.
- Attend the internship search workshop.
- Review the internships of previous students. You will find a list of organizations, names of alumni and the names of former supervisors in the Internship Section of the Resource Room. If alumni, see whether they are in the Alumni Career Network, and call them to learn about their experiences. We also encourage you to speak informally with second year students who can give you first-hand information about their internships this past summer.
- Gain access to MonsterTRAK internship listings through the Heinz School's Career Services and Carnegie Mellon's Career Center and TartanTRAK.
- Read the periodicals that contain internship listings. These are in the Resource Room.
- Network! Talk to alumni about internship opportunities in their organization. Alumni are an excellent resource for learning more about a particular organization, career field or employment opportunity. You can find alumni at these three place: Alumni Directory, Alumni Career Advisor Network, Carnegie Mellon Alumni Linked In Network
- Attend the networking events in Pittsburgh, New York, Washington DC, and San Francisco.
