Resumes & Cover Letters

Resumes

Your resume is a key marketing tool, created to attract attention, interest, and gain an interview. It is an advertisement of your skills, education and work experience.

On average, a prospective employer scans each resume for 30 seconds; it is therefore extremely important to create an eye-catching one- to two-page document. Heinz Career Services provides tips, samples, and resources to assist you in that endeavor.

Cover Letters

What does your cover letter do?

  1. Identifies the position for which you are applying and how you learned of it.
  2. Indicates why you are applying.
  3. Describes how your skills match the position requirements.
  4. Provides affect – an affective portrait of you – and subliminal reasons why they should interview you.
  5. Requests information on next steps and repeats availability, phone, email.

Like the resume, your cover letter is a marketing tool. Your cover letter should expand on the skills and experiences in your resume. Heinz Career Services provides guidelines, a suggested cover letter format, sample letters, and other resources to help you write your cover letter.
