Conference & Research Funding
G.S.A. Graduate Conference Funding
G.S.A. Graduate Student Conference Funding is financed by the Graduate Student Assembly, in collaboration with the Graduate Support Programs Office and the Provost's Office. The goal of the funding is to enable more Carnegie Mellon graduate students to make presentations or simply attend conferences in their field of study. This award is for $500 per student and is considered a partial source of support. Graduate students may not receive more than one Conference Funding award per academic year. Approximately 90 awards will be distributed each academic year.
Deadlines:
- SUBMIT between June 8 and June 12, 2009 (for conferences between 7/1/09 and 9/30/09 only)
- SUBMIT between September 7 and September 11, 2009 (for conferences between 10/1/09 and 12/31/09 only
- SUBMIT between December 7 and December 11, 2009 (for conferences between 1/1/10 and 3/31/10 only)
- SUBMIT between March 8 and March 12, 2010 (for conferences between 4/1/10 and 6/30/10 only)
Heinz College Conference Fund
The Heinz College has a limited pool of funds to support students’ participation in professional conferences. Students are strongly encouraged to simultaneously submit a conference request to the Graduate Support Programs Office and the Heinz College Conference Fund.
Eligibility:
- Students are only eligible to receive funding for one conference per academic year from the Heinz Conference Fund.
- Doctoral students are not eligible for this fund.
- Students are not eligible to receive funding for conferences that occur after they have graduated.
- Approval will not be given retroactively if an application is submitted after the conference has begun.
- Students in poor academic standing will not be considered for funding.
- Priority will be given to professional conferences where the student is presenting a paper or poster.
Deadlines:
Funds are awarded on a quarterly basis in accordance with the following schedule.Students should submit their application in the quarter prior to the quarter in which the conference falls. The deadlines are as follows:
- SUBMIT before June 30th (for conferences between July 1st – September 30th)
- SUBMIT before September 30th (for conferences between October 1st – December 31st)
- SUBMIT before December 31st (for conferences between January 1st – March 31st)
- SUBMIT before March 31st (for conferences between April 1st – June 30th)
The Director of Student Affairs and the Associate Deans will evaluate all funding requests and determine the level of support based on availability of funds and the role the student will play at the conference. Funding will be announced within 5 days after the submission deadline.

Graduate Small project Help (GuSH) Funding
GuSH funding is financed by the Graduate Student Assembly, in collaboration with the Graduate Support Programs Office and the Provost's Office. GuSH funding is intended to help graduate students reach their full potential through the graduate work they do at CMU. These awards, for $500 each, are to be used against costs incurred in the completion of research required for a graduate degree at Carnegie Mellon.
Ford Motor Company Graduate Student Research Grant
Students conducting research related to automotive or environmental issues may apply to the Ford Motor Company Graduate Student Research Grant. Research may focus on traditional fields of study (engineering, sciences, economics, etc.) or may be interdisciplinary (Engineering and Public Policy, Heinz, Social and Decision Sciences, etc.). Funded research may be a part of a larger research project in an existing lab or may be a product of independent research. Grants are awarded competitively based on proposals submitted by students. Requests for funding will be considered for a total of $500-$1,000. A maximum of $1,000 will be awarded per quarter. Participants in a project that receives funding are required to make a presentation and supply a final report to Ford Motor Company's Carnegie Mellon Campus Relations Team at the completion of the funded research. All presentations will be made on the Carnegie Mellon campus.
