Biography

Mr. Kowalsky joined Education Management Corporation in July 2002. Mr. Kowalsky received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1976 and a Masters degree in Public Management from Carnegie Mellon University’s H. John Heinz School of Management and Public Policy in 1985. A Leadership Certificate was earned in 1996 from the Katz School of the University of Pittsburgh facilitated at Wake Forest University. Mr. Kowalsky received his certification from the Institute for the Certification of Computer Professionals in 1981. He holds memberships in many local and national professional organizations including affiliation with the Chief Information Officer Institute and Cylab at Carnegie Mellon University. For twenty-two years prior to joining Education Management Corporation, he held CIO positions for St. Clair Hospital, St. Francis Health System, and Allegheny Health Education and Research Foundation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Beginning his career with IBM, he has over 35 years of information technology experience.

Mr. Kowalsky is an Adjunct Professor of Information Technology Management at the Heinz School. He has been a faculty member since 1987. Teaching since 1976, he has taught at the University of Pittsburgh and the Community College of Allegheny County.

Recognition includes the achievement of the 100 Most Wired Healthcare Organizations in 2000 and designated as one of Computerworld’s Premier 100 CIOs in 2004 and was designated a finalist for the Pittsburgh Technology CIO of the Year in 2005 and 2006. The Pittsburgh Technology Council awarded Education Management the leader in the category of IT service provider for its customers in 2005.
