Collaboration

The ISI engages you in hands-on learning experiences—project courses, strategic planning projects and internships—that enable regional and international partners to seize great opportunities.
Some examples include:

Institute for Social Entrepreneurs

A team of Heinz College students and the Institute for Social Entrepreneurs are jointly conducting the Social Enterprise Research Project (SERP), a comprehensive, longitudinal study of profit-making social enterprises, the first of its kind. The project encompasses social enterprises in both the non-profit and private sectors and is limited to those with annual sales of at least $5 million. Initial results will be published in 2009.

Coro Center for Civic Leadership

Two Heinz College students partnered with Pittsburgh’s Coro Center for Civic Leadership to develop and submit a business plan to the ISI’s first Social Enterprise Business Plan Competition in spring 2008. The plan won first place in the Greater Pittsburgh category, and provided seed funding to the Coro Center to further explore developing the first full-service coffee shop in the RiverWalk Corporate Center, which would provide a source of unrestricted funding to the Coro Center.

Internship Partners

In spring 2008, the ISI matched interns with GTECH Strategies (Growth Through Energy and Community Health), a start-up social enterprise led by Heinz College graduates. In the past the Heinz College has also placed interns with the Good Grief Center and For Your Good Health, a start-up aiming to keep children with asthma and other chronic illness healthy and active.
