Heinz College - LA Office

Heinz College's  LA office was established in July 2006 to help strengthen the School’s connections to Hollywood and the entertainment industry. Our goal is to create a dynamic and productive network that benefits our community at large and brings the unique strengths of Carnegie Mellon to positively impact the show biz industry.

Our first program offering is the Master of Entertainment Industry Management (MEIM) program which brings a select group of students from Pittsburgh to complete their second year of study in LA.  When in LA, the students will benefit from advanced coursework taught by experts in the entertainment industry, opportunities to meet leaders and build their professional networks, and work as an apprentice in a studio or a production company to gain valuable work experience.

Featured MEIM Course: Intellectual Property Rights Issues

Course Number: 93.855
Semester Credit Hours: 6

COURSE OVERVIEW: This class will track a concept to screen to audience. There is a competitive marketplace in Hollywood that gobbles up the rights to every viable videogame, book, and person. We will learn about the power of the property and focus on the path from idea to film – and who does what in the process.

The glamorous and not so glamorous world of film festivals are where studios scour for up-and-coming talent, and where has-beens turn to resurrect careers. Building on the world of festivals, we will look at how an independent movie gets financed, packaged, and sold to domestic and foreign distributors. This class will explore the various sources of the filmic idea/product and follow it through distribution, on both a studio and independent level. The different types of jobs and recommended path to become a film executive are an important context necessary to have an educated discussion about the origin of films. The executive flow chart and how to crack the studio job system are conclusions that will be drawn utilizing the information presented as the required skill set.
