Collaborative Accelerated Master's Program with Allegheny College
Carnegie Mellon University’s H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management and Allegheny College offer an accelerated master’s program to qualified Allegheny College students. The program, structured as three years at Allegheny College followed by four semesters at the Heinz School, will result in students receiving both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in less time than is normally required
Eligibility
The program is designed for Allegheny College students who have completed their junior year.
Admissions Requirements
Students will apply in the fall of their junior year for admission at the beginning of their senior year. To apply, students must take the GRE (or GMAT), complete an application form (including resume/CV and essay), submit transcripts from all colleges and universities they have attended, and three letters of recommendation. Students can apply on-line for free. Students are granted admission on the basis of academic achievement, performance on the GRE, leadership experience, related experience in the proposed field of study, fit of their goals with the program, and recommendations that indicate they are capable of excelling in a rigorous master’s program. No single factor guarantees or prevents admission; all factors are weighed in the process.
Tuition and fees
Students will pay tuition and fees to Allegheny College from their freshman through junior years. They will pay tuition and fees to Carnegie Mellon for their graduate program for four semesters beyond the completion of the junior year. Allegheny students also will be responsible for paying a maintenance fee to Allegheny while enrolled at Carnegie Mellon in their senior year.
Conferral of Degrees
Students will receive both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees upon completion of their graduate program at Carnegie Mellon. Allegheny College will count units taken during the master’s program toward the student’s bachelor’s degree according to its policies and procedures. The Heinz School will forward to Allegheny College transcripts and other necessary information on student academic performance.
Scholarships
Allegheny College students will be eligible for scholarship support from Allegheny College for their freshman through junior years. They will be eligible for scholarship support from the Heinz School for the length of their graduate program and can apply to any and all Heinz School scholarship funds for which they are eligible (based on program and the individual scholarship fund’s specific requirements). Because Allegheny College students will not receive their bachelor’s degrees until they complete the Heinz School degree, the federal government requires that Allegheny College be responsible for the processing of federal financial aids. To enable this, Allegheny and Heinz will enter into a consortium agreement.
Number of Students
Each year, the Heinz School will admit a maximum of five qualified Allegheny College students to the MAM program.
Prerequisites
The MAM program does not have formal prerequisites for admission. However, because the curriculum is highly quantitative, students should take at least one 200 or 300 level in statistics and in pre-calculus. Students who have not taken this coursework may be required to attend a summer program at the Heinz School for up to six weeks prior to the start of their program. There is no tuition for the summer program. We would encourage students to take these courses at Allegheny.
