MSBTM Carnegie Mellon University Undergraduates' Accelerated Master's Program

We offer an Accelerated Master’s Program to qualified Carnegie Mellon University students. The program—structured as three years as a Carnegie Mellon undergrad, followed by two semesters as an integrated undergrad/grad student completing bachelor’s degree requirements and beginning graduate level coursework, and then a fifth and final year as a full-time MSBTM graduate student—results in students receiving both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in less time than is normally required.

Eligibility

  • Carnegie Mellon undergraduate students from any major within the Carnegie Institute of Technology or the Mellon College of Science with a strong academic background and most of their undergraduate requirements completed.
  • Students apply in junior year of study and are eligible to enroll in senior year.

Application Materials

  • Completed application form. Apply online.
  • 3 letters of recommendation
    • 2 or 3 letters from CMU faculty
    • 1 of the letters may be from a professional contact – i.e. internship supervisor, hourly position supervisor
  • Official Carnegie Mellon transcript and, if applicable, official transcript from all colleges or universities attended, regardless of whether credit or degree was obtained.
  • An essay describing your interest in this field and how your experience and proposed study will help you reach your career goals.
  • Official GRE or GMAT scores – required of ALL MSBTM AMP applicants. Since the GRE and GMAT are now offered year round, either examination can be taken at any time. However, you should take the test no later than the application deadline for which you are applying. There is no minimum score required. If taking the GRE, only the general test is required.
  • A current resume with your education information, work experience (including internships and hourly positions) and extracurricular information.
  • Completed Undergraduate Course Requirements form with advisor’s signature.
  • Interviews are required. Candidates will be contacted by the Admissions Office to schedule an interview after the application for admission has been submitted, if the interview has not been previously completed.
  • Application deadline for prospective AMP students is January 10*

*The application form must be submitted via the online application system by the deadline. Supporting materials sent by mail (if any) must be postmarked by the deadline. Our admissions committee cannot begin reviewing your application until we have received all of your application materials. If space remains in the class after the deadline we will continue to accept applications. Scholarship opportunities after the deadline are limited.

Financial Aid

  • Undergraduate students do not qualify for MSBTM financial aid.
  • Students will qualify for aid in the final two semesters of the MSBTM- AMP (after having completed their Bachelor’s degree).
  • Financial Aid contact: Betty Casale.

Admission Prerequisites and Degree Requirements

  • Prerequisite coursework in college calculus and either statistics, calculus II or linear algebra must be completed before matriculating.  Candidates who do not meet the math requirements may be admitted with the provision that they complete the necessary math courses prior to joining the program. We offer a Quantitative Skills Review Program (QSRP) on campus to students who have studied calculus, but would like a review before classes begin. In addition, prerequisite course grades should be a “B” or higher in the following classes:
Business Math Science/Technology
73-100 21-120 03-121
70-311 or 70-381 21-122 09-105
  70-207/36-247 2 Electives
  21-257
  • 198 units are required to complete the MSBTM program.
  • Elective Course Distribution: Tepper, Heinz and MCS electives must be approved by the Program Director. Distribution must include a minimum of 12 units from each school. All of the undergraduate courses should be upper division, and should be relevant to the content of the Heinz degree. Only undergraduate courses with a grade of B or better may be counted toward the degree.
  • Summer internship required.

Benefits

  • You will complete two semesters of coursework as an integrated undergraduate-graduate student before graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in May.
  • You will be able to complete an internship in the summer following your senior year.
  • Completing your internship prior to starting the final two semesters will allow you to have more work experience to discuss with recruiters visiting campus during the fall semester.
  • You will be eligible for MSBTM financial aid in the final two semesters of the program (after having completed a Bachelor’s degree).
  • You may be able to exempt certain MSBTM courses with units earned by completing undergraduate coursework which would give you more flexibility in course selection.
