MEIM Capstone Project
The MEIM Program recognizes that classroom instruction can only take you so far, and that the best learning opportunities are those that require you to apply your knowledge and skills to real world issues. That's the basis of the capstone project -- it will help you solidify the skills and knowledge you gained the classroom. The capstone project will be along the lines of a traditional thesis, but more as "applied research" than pure scholarship. Program leadership considered the idea of a more traditional thesis, but ultimately decided that while a thesis would contribute to your knowledge base, it would not necessarily provide you with either an experience that broadens your context of the industry or serve as a proper "showcase" piece in a portfolio for future employers.
The Capstone Project can be any substantial effort by a student that would: 1) demonstrate what s/he has learned, 2) extend the student’s learning through a challenging exercise, and 3) be a prominent product that serves the career interests of the student. The Capstone Projects for the 2008 graudating class were diverse and included:
- a major study of the depth, breadth, challenges and opportunities of Spanish-speaking media in North America;
- a script, budget and supporting documentation for a 30-minute situation comedy pilot;
- and the production of a short film.
These Capstone Projects reflected the career aspirations of the individual students, extending their classroom experiences and positioning them with a strong "portfolio" piece that demonstrates their expertise and potential to future employers.
