HCPM Common Courses
The common core of the HCPM program is one of the central aspects of the program that differentiates it from other schools that focus on healthcare management or public health. At Heinz College, we provide students with a quantitative toolkit of skills that is highly valued by employers and that sets them apart from the crowd. These skills are transferable outside of the health care arena and give our students a competitive edge. Common core courses are offered jointly through our Public Policy and Management (PPM) program which is one of the top ranked programs of its kind in the country. The common core provides students with important competencies including:
- Organizational development/organizational behavior theory and application
- Information systems management and assessment
- Leadership – visioning, change management and team development
- Economic analysis and application to decision making
Key parts of the common core are student learning experiences including:
- Systems synthesis projects—these projects are semester long projects that allow students to work in teams and work for a real client in the health sector.
-
Internships—all students are required to engage in a 10 week internship or residency at a health agency or organization of their choosing.
