PPIA Junior Summer Institute

The Public Policy and International Affairs Fellowship (PPIA) is a national program that prepares adults for an advanced degree and ultimately for careers and influential roles serving the public good. The flagship program of this organization is the Junior Summer Institute (JSI), a rigorous seven-week training focused on quantitative, analytical and communication skills.

From a highly selective and competitive national application pool, twenty college juniors were invited to participate in the Heinz College’s PPIA JSI program. The composition of the PPIA class reflects academic, ethnic, regional, sexual orientation, gender, religious belief and age diversity, as well as the potential and demonstrated leadership necessary to positively impact the public sector.

Core coursework for the PPIA Junior Summer Institute reflects the multidisciplinary approach and quantitative focus for which Heinz College has become known. Additional components of the program include leadership development, site visits, and guest speakers.

This is the eighth year that Carnegie Mellon’s Heinz College has hosted a JSI since 2004, and we are committed to providing students with solid skills to prepare them for graduate study in public policy.

Students who successfully complete any PPIA Junior Summer Institute and are admitted to the Master of Science in Public Policy and Management (MSPPM) or the Master of Science in Health Care Policy and Management (MSHCPM) programs at Heinz College will receive a minimum of a half-tuition and up to full-tuition scholarship and a stipend of $6,000 per year.
