2003 Globalization Workshop

The Software Industry Center (SWIC), a Sloan Industry Center at the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University, will be hosting the 2003 Globalization Workshop on the weekend of July 13 -14, 2003. Led by Ashish Arora, Center Director and Associate Professor of Economics and Public Policy, the workshop will be attended by a number of top international scholars and industry experts. The workshop, the final in a series of such events, is the culmination of extensive research on the global software industry conducted at the SWIC over the last three years, and precedes the publication of an upcoming volume on "Software In Emerging Economies".

The workshop will include presentations on the software industry in Ireland, India, Israel, China and Brazil. Participants will learn how and why the software industry has developed in these regions, what characterizes and determines a region's success, and what lessons these experiences hold for other developing regions of the world. Along with presentations on the industry, issues such as models for company formation and growth, the role of government policies, and the impact of multinational corporations and international migration will be discussed. This project has already received significant interest from policy makers and industry representatives seeking to emulate these success stories in other developing economies.
