Shucker Named Luce Scholar

Cherington Love Shucker has been named a Luce Scholar for 2003-4. This prestigious fellowship is awarded annually to 18 young American scholars to enable them to live and work in Asia for a year. Shucker, a Heinz School graduate student working toward a master's in public policy and management, will focus her work on HIV/AIDS policies. Her exact placement will be determined in the coming months.

Nominations for the Luce Fellowship are made by more than 65 colleges and universities. Nominees must have a record of high achievement, outstanding leadership ability and a clearly defined career interest with evidence of potential for professional accomplishment. After interviews with the foundation's staff, finalists meet with one of three selection panels who choose the 18 Luce Scholars. According the the Luce Foundation, "It is worth noting that we look for evidence that a candidate will be a leader both within his or her profession and within the broader community. Initiative, creativity, the respect of one's peers, maturity, strength of character, self-confidence tempered by self-awareness, a sense of responsibility, sensitivity, a positive personality; all these are aspects of what we refer to broadly as leadership."
