The Heinz School's graduate programs in public affairs once again rank among the nation's elite, according to U.S.News & World Report magazine's qualitative and quantitative analysis of "America's Best Graduate Schools, 2005 edition."

The Heinz School was ranked 8th overall among schools of public affairs. Of the 253 schools of public affairs across the nation that were surveyed, the Heinz School ranked:

  • 1st in Information and Technology Management (retaining the top spot it earned in the last rankings);
  • 1st in Criminal Justice Policy and Management (up from 3rd place);
  • 4th in Public Policy Analysis (maintaining its ranking);
  • 7th in Environmental Policy and Management (up from 10th place);
  • 7th in Health Policy and Management (a new specialty in this year's rankings).

The school also ranked well in City Management and Urban Policy (14th), Public Finance and Budgeting (16th), Public Management and Administration (16th), and Social Policy (15th).

Rankings of master's programs in public affairs are based on a nation-wide survey. The list of programs that were ranked was provided by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) and the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM). Respondents were asked to rate the academic quality of programs based on their assessment of all factors bearing on excellence, such as curriculum, record of scholarship, and quality of faculty and graduates.

The Heinz School's placement in the U.S.News & World Report rankings is a reflection of its cutting-edge research and innovative teaching techniques. The School's interdisciplinary approach fosters exceptional programs in emerging issues of public policy, as well as in well-established managerial and policy areas.
