Heinz School 2005 Commencement

The H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management held its 34th Commencement ceremony on May 15, 2005. Dean Mark Wessel presided over the ceremony, in which 243 students from nine different programs were granted degrees.

William Drayton, Chairman of the Ashoka Foundation, delivered the commencement address, the student speaker was La'Tasha Mayes, MSPPM graduate and Mike Rann, Premier of South Australia, delivered the charge to the graduates.

The following awards were presented:

Otto A. Davis Award

Awarded annually in honor of Otto A. Davis, second dean of the Heinz School, to an individual who exemplifies the School's commitment to racial and social justice.

Awarded to Monique Lanaux, MSPPM graduate.

Heinz School Teaching Assistant Award

Awarded annually to a teaching assistant in recognition of outstanding performance.

Awarded to Joshua Ferguson, PhD graduate, and Rebecca DerGarabedian, MSPPM graduate.

Barbara Jenkins Award

Awarded annually in memory of Barbara Jenkins (MS '87) to a graduating student who has demonstrated service to the Heinz School and made significant contributions to the quality of life for residents in the Pittsburgh region.

Awarded to Kevin Fleming, MSPPM graduate.

Staff Excellence Award

Awarded for outstanding service to the Heinz School community by a staff member.

Awarded to Martin Black, Director of Career Services, and David Eber, Associate Director of Admission.

Martcia Wade Teaching Award

Given in memory of a former faculty member who was committed to student learning, this award is presented to a faculty member in recognition of outstanding performance.

Awarded to Kristen Kurland, Associate Teaching Professor.

Harry Faulk MPM Scholarship

Initiated and supported by MPM graduates and students, the scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student in honor of Harry Faulk, former Associate Dean of the Heinz School.

Awarded to Marcie Eberhart and Tina Rusiski, MPM students
