Oliver Appointed Dean of Faculty Development in Qatar
Dr. Marion Oliver has been appointed to the position of Special Assistant to the Dean of Faculty Development at the Carnegie Mellon Qatar campus, where he is also Professor of Mathematics. In this position he will work with Dean Chuck Thorpe to provide support for a wide range of faculty issues.
Oliver served as Associate Dean at the Heinz School (then known as the School of Urban and Public Affairs) from 1971 through 1979. He was the first African American to hold an Associate Dean position at Carnegie Mellon.
Oliver has had numerous academic and administrative appointments. He served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Millersville University; Associate Provost at the University of Pennsylvania; and Vice Dean of the Wharton School and Director of the Undergraduate Programs. In addition to his faculty appointment at Carnegie Mellon, he has held faculty positions at the Graduate School of International and Public Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh; the Department of Statistics at the University of Pennsylvania; and the School of Business & Industry at Florida A&M University.
He spent a ten year sabbatical from higher education from 1990 to 2000 at the Mobil Oil Corporation (now Exxon Mobil) managing a variety of programs, including training for the Middle East.
