Remembering Harry Faulk

Dr. Harry R. Faulk died on Monday, May 5, 2008, at the age of 87.

Dr. Faulk joined Carnegie Mellon's Heinz School in 1982 and served as Associate Dean until 2001, after which he continued his involvement with the School as a Professor of Education Policy.

Dr. Faulk's loadstar accomplishment at Carnegie Mellon was the development and nurturing of the Master of Public Management (MPM) Program, though which mid-career professionals from the Pittsburgh region and internationally can advance their personal and professional capabilities. He served as a personal role model and extraordinary leader of mid-career masters programs at the Heinz School, providing an incalculable impact on the lives of MPM graduates. His cultivation of international students in the MPM program similarly contributed to Carnegie Mellon's international exposure and respect.

He founded the College Management Program and the Senior Executive Seminar, as well as the Wright Patterson Executive Program. Along with Bob Pearson, he introduced the Master of Science in Health Care Policy and Management (MSHCPM) Program. He worked with Professor Robert Strauss to develop the Master of Science in Educational Technology Management (MSETM) Program. The Nonprofit Management Institute and many training programs for City of Pittsburgh employees were also ideas that he brought to fruition.

Over the years, Dr. Faulk spearheaded efforts that led to major grants from organizations including the Booth Ferris Foundation, the Mellon Foundation and the Benedum Foundation. Along with Al Novak, Harry laid the foundation for the E.J. Barone Chair in Health Economics. His talent for providing extraordinary customer service was something for which he received university-wide recognition.

Dr. Faulk was a former Superintendent of Schools for Elizabeth-Forward, McKeesport, and Keystone Oaks School Districts, and also was a former Assistant Superintendent of Allegheny County Schools. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, and the American Association of School Administrators. He served for many years as an Elder at the Round Hill Presbyterian Church, Elizabeth Twp.

He is survived by his wife, Annabelle Pittavino Faulk, daughters, Pamela Ann (Thomas) Bassett of Greenock, Karen Mae (Edward M.) Warnick of Morgantown, WVA, son, Harry R. (Karen Lee) Faulk of Beckley, WVA, sister, Teresa Vukmanic of Washington, PA, brother, Edward Faulk of Elizabeth Twp., 9 grandchildren, 12 great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Ometz and brothers, Leslie, John and Edmond Faulk. Visitation is private.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Michael RomanCatholic Church, Elizabeth Twp. on Thursday, May 8, 2008, at 12:00 noon with his grandson, the Rev. Clint Zadroga, officiating (everyone please meet at the Church.) Interment will follow at the Round Hill Cemetery, Elizabeth Twp.
