Schneider Presents Innovative Methods at International Symposium of Forecasting

Matthew Schneider, MSPPM 2008 and former U.S. Navy Lieutenant, presented his paper "Reanalyzing M3 Competition Data Using Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curves" at the 2008 International Symposium of Forecasting on June 24 in Nice, France. The paper is the first to apply statistical tests developed in the medical statistics field to the forecasting area. (See Heinz School Working paper 2008-22.) Schneider received a student travel grant from the International Institute of Forecasters to attend the conference.

The paper was coauthored with Heinz School Professor of Public Policy and Management Information Systems Wilpen Gorr, and the work was done by Schneider in two independent studies courses. This approach to conducting research with master students, using independent studies courses and working papers, replaces the option of a master thesis in the MSPPM program.

In August, Schneider will start his Ph.D. program at Pardee RAND Graduate School in Santa Monica, California, where he has been awarded the Newton M. Minow Scholarship and will pursue public policy research.
