CMU’s Heinz College and NACD Announce Launch of Effective AI Oversight for Directors Certificate Program

Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU) Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy and the National Association of Corporate Directors® (NACD®) have launched the Effective AI Oversight for Directors Certificate Program, a comprehensive learning experience designed specifically for NACD’s corporate board members.

“Corporate boards must navigate rapidly evolving AI technologies that are reshaping industries, business models, and risk landscapes,” said David Ulicne, executive director of Executive Education at Heinz College. “This collaboration with NACD enables us to empower directors with the strategic insight and governance frameworks needed to oversee AI responsibly.”

Drawing on the academic and industry expertise that powers CMU’s Chief Data and AI Officer Program and NACD’s trusted expertise in boardroom leadership continuing education, the Effective AI Oversight for Directors Certificate Program translates complex data and AI concepts into actionable governance guidance. Through modules covering data management, digital transformation, responsible AI, cybersecurity and strategic AI alignment, directors will gain the knowledge needed to govern their organizations through the next wave of digital disruption.

“From competitive advantage to ethical use of AI, the new era has ushered in both great business opportunities and unique governance challenges," said Friso van der Oord, NACD senior vice president of Content. “This collaboration with CMU fills a critical gap in modern board education by giving directors the tools they need to oversee AI adoption, ensure its responsible and secure use and guide organizations toward breakthrough innovation.”

Developed to meet the unique needs of corporate boards, the 10-module, 22-hour asynchronous Effective AI Oversight for Directors Certificate Program equips directors with the frameworks, language and confidence to govern AI-driven transformation responsibly. The program’s modular design allows board members to develop a nuanced understanding of topics such as generative AI and large language models (LLM), enterprise data maturity, responsible AI frameworks, AI system security, digital infrastructure and the evolving role of data and AI leadership within organizations.

The certificate program is now available. Learn more or register for the program.
