Mary Ellen Benedict

Adjunct Faculty

Mary Ellen Benedict is a Professor of Economics at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and an adjunct professor at the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy.

Dr. Benedict received her M.S. in 1985 and Ph.D. in1991 from the Heinz School. She is a vice-president and Board member of the international economic society, Omicron Delta Epsilon, and past president and Board member of the Ohio Association of Economics and Political Scientists. Dr. Benedict also serves as assistant editor to the Journal of Economics and Politics.

Honors

Benedict has won a number of teaching and advising awards for her work with undergraduate and graduate students, including the national 2004 Labor and Employment Relations Association Excellence in Education Award, the 2004 Bowling Green State University (BGSU) Elliot Blinn Research Award (for work with undergraduate research), 2003’s BGSU College of Business Alumni Undergraduate Teaching Award, 2002’s BGSU Outstanding Advisor Award, the 2000 Marie R. Hodge Advising Award and the 1998 Undergraduate Student Government Faculty Excellence Award, also from BGSU. Her research work was recognized with the 2001 Midwest Business Administration Association’s Distinguished Paper in Legal Studies Award, the 2001 Ralph C. Hoeber Excellence in Research Award from the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, and grants and awards from BGSU.

Research

Benedict’s current research on gender differences in self-employment examines the factors that determine the self-employment choice and ultimately, salary differences between men and women. In 2006, Benedict will be one of three keynote speakers at a global symposium on women’s labor at the HiroshimaJogakuin University. Benedict has also published in the areas of unionization and higher education, gender issues, economics education, and income inequality. Her work has appeared in many journals, including the Journal of Labor Research, Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Public Sector, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, International Economic Review, American Journal of Economics and Sociology, and The American Economist.
Teaching

Benedict’s main areas of teaching are in general economics, labor economics, labor relations, and econometrics. She also coordinated the annual Economics Teaching Conference at Bowling Green State University from 2003 to 2005. Her work in the classroom has led to publications in the areas of economics education, labor relations, and negotiations.
Community Service

Benedict has been active on several academic-related boards, most recently the Ohio Association of Economists and Political Scientists, where she has served in several office positions, including President. She is also active with the international Omicron Delta Epsilon and locally, with the Etna Economic Development Committee. Her service work was rewarded with the BGSU College of Business Service Award in 2005. Her past work with the Alumni Executive Board of the Heinz School led to the 1994 Alumni Clan Award and the 1999 Alumni Service Award from Carnegie Mellon University.
