Dr. Inderpal Bhandari Joins the Faculty at Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College


Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) announced today that Inderpal Bhandari, Ph.D., will join the faculty of CMU’s Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy serving as a Distinguished Executive in Residence. In this position, Dr. Bhandari will continue service as a technical advisor and faculty member within the CMU Chief Data Officer Program, and lend his expertise in expanding the college’s AI executive education offerings.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Bhandari to the Heinz College community,” said Dean Ramayya Krishnan. “As a pioneer in the field of data strategy, data analytics, and AI with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Bhandari will be a valuable addition to our esteemed list of faculty.”

Prior to joining Heinz College, Bhandari served as IBM’s Global Chief Data Officer where he led data and AI strategy to secure IBM’s position as the number one AI and hybrid cloud provider for enterprise. Before joining IBM in 2015, Bhandari held senior data strategy positions at Medco, Express Scripts, and Cambia Health Solutions.

“I am honored and excited for the opportunity to join the Heinz College as a Distinguished Executive in Residence,” said Bhandari. “I have a long history with CMU having received my Ph.D. in Computer Engineering and serving as an advisor and board chair for CMU’s Chief Data Officer Certificate Program. I look forward to expanding my role in this new position.”

In addition to his roles at IBM, Medco, Express Scripts, and Cambia Health Solutions, Bhandari currently serves on the board of directors at the Walgreens Boots Alliance, and has previously served on the board of directors at SportsEdTV, Swoop, and the United Way in Oregon.

He officially started the role in December 2023.
