Deeper Conversations

Our role as an institution of higher education is to educate and foster informed, respectful dialogue on complex issues. The Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences and Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy have collaborated to create a series of events that will take place during the spring and fall semesters of 2024. These events aim to illuminate the historical, political, cultural, and narrative backgrounds of complex issues facing our society. We have intentionally created forums that represent multiple perspectives, humbly recognizing that there are many viewpoints on these long-standing conflicts.

These events are for CMU faculty, staff, students, alumni and parents, and registration is required.

Public service is evolving—driven by rapid innovation, shifting civic expectations, and the growing demand for resilient, transparent leadership. In this timely conversation, three distinguished public servants will share personal reflections and professional insights on what it means to serve in today’s dynamic and often unpredictable environment.

Drawing from careers in government, conservation, and civic education, the panelists will explore how their understanding of public service has changed over time, how they foster public trust while remaining non-partisan, and how storytelling and public engagement shape the perception of institutions. They’ll also offer guidance on the skills and mindsets future leaders should cultivate and share what gives them hope for the future of civic leadership.

Whether you're a student, early-career professional, or seasoned public servant, this conversation will offer inspiration, practical guidance, and a renewed sense of purpose for those committed to making a meaningful impact.
