First Steps to Complete

Important Dates

  • Move to Pittsburgh

We recommend that students are moved-in and settled in Pittsburgh a few days prior to the mandatory Heinz Orientation (5/13/19 or 8/16/19). The Heinz orientation schedule does not allow much time for moving-in activities as we expect all students will be settled prior to the Heinz Orientation. (Students beginning in August should remember that they may also want to attend the University-wide orientation that takes place earlier. See dates below.)

You will find great details here about Moving to Pittsburgh.

Deadline to Complete for May Start Students: May 6, 2019

Deadline to Complete for August Start Students: August 9, 2019

  • Heinz College Orientation - Mandatory for All Programs

Attending Heinz College orientation is mandatory. Your graduate experience doesn't begin with classes - it begins HERE! (In a big way!) Please plan your arrival in Pittsburgh accordingly.

Attendance will be recorded at Heinz Orientation events via your CMU ID+ Card.

Heinz Orientation is exciting and full of opportunties for you to engage with your fellow incoming students from across disciplines. You may download LAST year's schedule for a sense of what to expect this year...the exact timing will be different, but we will offer a similair experience in 2018!

*Saturday 8/18/18 will be Placement Exams only. Students who do not plan to take a placement exam are not required to attend Saturday. Many students do not fully appreciate the benefit of these exams until attending Day 1 of Heinz Orientation. For this reason, I encourage all students to leave this date open.

Required Dates for May Start Students: Monday through Friday, May 13-17, 2019. See LAST YEAR'S May 2018 agenda for details about this year's orientation.

Required Dates for August Start Students: Friday, August 16, 2019; Saturday, August 17, 2019; Monday through Thursday, August 19-22, 2019. See LAST YEAR'S August 2018 agenda for details about this year's orientation. (Please note: this agenda is subject to change.)

  • Placement Exams

Students who wish to place out of or enter the intermediate section of a required course are required to take a placement exam. The Placement Exams are given one day only. No make-up exams are offered. Some exams will require a pre-registration. If this is a case, students will be notified via email. Faculty reserve the right to adjust Placement exam processes as needed prior to Heinz Orientation.

Please read through all details regarding the placement exam process prior to Heinz Orientation. The exam schedule will be posted with the Heinz Orientation Schedule.

Required date for May start students: Wednesday, May 15, 2019

Required date for August start students: Saturday, August 17, 2019

  • University-wide Graduate Student Orientation

Attending University-wide graduate student orientation is a great way to learn about Carnegie Mellon University from a campus-wide perspective. All graduate students across the CMU campus are invited to learn more about campus services, health insurance, transportation, shopping and more. Most topics are not included in the required Heinz Orientation, but you may see some topics overlap.

This orientation is planned and presented by the Carnegie Mellon University Office of the Assistant Vice Provost for Graduate Education.

Because these Orientation dates are not required, we ask that you RSVP to attend these dates.

University-wide graduate student orientation dates for May and August start students: Monday through Friday, August 12-15, 2019

RSVP to Attend (after July 1, 2019)

  • International Student Orientation "OIE" (Mandatory for International Students)

International Students and International Exchange Students are required to attend one of the International Student Orientation sessions presented by the Office of International Education.

In May: Generally one (1) session only is available. Plan to attend that session as scheduled.

In August: OIE will offer up to six (6) Orientation options for students to choose from. Generally 2 sessions are offered in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks of August. You are very limited because of the mandatory Heinz Orientation Schedule. Register only for a session that does not conflict with Heinz Orientation.

Attendance to one session is mandatory for all International students. Required date for May start students: 1 option. See your I-20 document for more details.

Required date for August start students: 6 options to choose from. Register as early as possible.
