Welcome, and congratulations on your admission to Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy!

We are excited to debut our Digital Orientation for the 2020 incoming class. Between now and the start of the Fall semester, we will be hosting a number of wide-ranging virtual events to provide you with opportunities to prepare for your first semester and get to know the other members of the Heinz community including faculty, staff, continuing students and your classmates. We hope you'll join us! Check back here for more details in mid-June.

First Steps to Complete


  • 1. Accept the Offer of Admission

    Accept the offer of admission by completing the online Response Form located within your online admission letter. details

  • 2. Pay the Enrollment Deposit

    Not all students are required to pay a deposit. Please check your online admission letter. details

  • 3. Complete the Credentials Verification Process

    Complete the credentials verification process after you receive an email message from "Carnegie Mellon University - Heinz College <automation@instascreen.net>" with subject line Credential Verification Disclosure and Authorization Form.

      • August starts: Month of May

    Please Note: ProVerify will contact your recent employers and application recommenders shortly after you submit the Disclosure and Authorization Form. We recommend that you make your recent employers and recommenders aware of this in advance.

  • 4. Review Conditional Enrollment Information

    If your admission includes a condition on enrollment (QSSP, Programming course, etc.), review the information regarding Conditional Enrollment details

  • 5. Activate your Andrew User ID

    Activate your Andrew User ID. You will receive an email from IT-HELP (it-help@cmu.edu) with the Subject: "FirstPass: Setting Your Andrew Account Password." Follow the directions in that email. Expect this email 2 to 4 weeks after accepting the offer of admission.

  • 6. All other programs: Save the date for Admitted Student Weekend

    Admitted Student Events will be held March 28 - April 14, 2020. Many sessions are recorded for on-demand viewing at a later date. Check the event page for more details.

Important Dates


  • Move to Pittsburgh

    There are numerous factors at play that will prevent many incoming students from being on campus and moving to Pittsburgh in the Fall — it is our recommendation, if your circumstances allow, that you stay in your primary location for the Fall 2020 semester and take classes at a distance. You can then transition to Pittsburgh over the winter break to begin the Spring 2021 semester in January.

    All resources provided will be useful regardless of when you move to Pittsburgh.

  • Heinz College Orientation - Mandatory for All Programs

    Your graduate experience doesn't begin with classes - it begins with New Student Orientation! Between now and the start of the Fall semester, we will be hosting a number of wide-ranging virtual events to provide you with opportunities to prepare for your first semester and get to know the other members of the Heinz community including faculty, staff, continuing students and your classmates.

    Attendance will be recorded at Heinz Orientation events. A select number of orientation programs will be Mandatory.

  • Placement Exams

    Students who wish to place out of or enter the intermediate section of a required course are required to take a placement exam. Students will have only 1 opportunity to take each exam. No make-up exams are offered. Some exams will require a pre-registration. If this is the case, students will be notified via email. Faculty reserve the right to adjust Placement exam processes as needed.

    Detailed information regarding the schedule and delivery of Placement Exams will be available soon.

  • University-wide Graduate Student Orientation

    Attending University-wide graduate student orientation is a great way to learn about Carnegie Mellon University from a campus-wide perspective. All graduate students across the CMU campus are invited to learn more about campus services, health insurance, transportation, shopping and more. Most topics covered are not included in the Heinz College Orientation programming, but you may see some themes or topics overlap.

    This orientation is planned and presented by the Carnegie Mellon University Office of the Assistant Vice Provost for Graduate Education.

    Because these Orientation dates are not required, we ask that you RSVP to attend these dates.

    University-wide graduate student orientation will be offered in a digital format for 2020. Dates TBA.

  • International Student Orientation "OIE" (Mandatory for International Students)

    International Students and International Exchange Students who are able to arrive on campus for the Fall 2020 semester are required to attend one of the International Student Orientation sessions presented by the Office of International Education.

    Begining August 20, 2020: OIE will host Virtual Orientation and Mandatory Immigrtaion Check-In sessions. These sessions are for students who plan to be physically present on a CMU campus in the U.S. for the fall semester, as well as guidance for students who plan to start their studies remotely overseas. Full details and instructions for these sessions can be found at www.cmu.edu/oie/orientation.

    For international students who are able to physically make it to CMU's Pittsburgh campus, attendance to one international orientation session is mandatory.

  • First Day of Classes

    Heinz College Academic Calendar and CMU Academic Calendar

    The Section (SEC) of a course defines the period of time the class will meet.

    • SEC A through J = Entire length of the semester
    • SEC A1, A3, A5 and J1, J3, J5 = 1st HALF of semester only
    • SEC A2, A4, A6 and J2, J4, J6 = 2nd HALF of semester only

    First day of classes for August start students: August 31, 2020

  • First Day of QSSP

    Students required to attend QSSP should review the information regarding Conditional Enrollment to determine the date you are required to start these programs.
