Housing Accommodations
Special housing accommodations/single-room requests will not be granted without a formal accommodation through CMU's Office of Disability Resources (ODR). REU students must work with their licensed medical or mental health provider to submit a University Housing Accommodations Request Form to the Office of Disability Resources.

Housing Accommodation Request Forms for students in summer programs must be submitted and approved by the ODR no later than 30-business days prior to the student's date of check-in. We recommend getting started EARLY and submit paperwork by May 1st.

Please Note: If a student submits a housing accommodation form after this deadline, a room meeting the student's accommodation needs may not be available or they may be placed on a waitlist since rooms have already been assigned.

Housing Services does not offer accommodations for a specific religious affiliation or accommodations such as single rooms or private bathrooms for religious reasons.

Custodial/Trash
Residents are responsible for cleaning their rooms/apartments throughout their stay and for garbage removal from their rooms/apartments. Trash should be disposed of in the trash rooms located on each floor. Residents are asked not to drag bags of trash down the hallways.

Residents are responsible for cleaning up after themselves if utilizing the building’s lounges, study rooms, etc.

Laundry
Laundry is free and does not require a laundry card. There are two laundry rooms located on each floor of Forbes Beeler.

Internet/Cable
The internet in Forbes Beeler is CMU Wi-Fi wired throughout the building.

Lock-Outs
For any lock-outs during business hours, residents should visit the CES Summer Housing Guest Services Office (1st Floor of Stever House - 1030 Morewood Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213). For any lockouts after 5:00pm during the week, or anytime on the weekends, participants will need to call University Police on the non-emergency line 412-268-6232 for assistance with gaining access to their apartments/rooms.

Mail
REU attendees cannot send mail to Forbes Beeler – it will not be delivered. If you would like to have access to a mailbox throughout the duration of IT Lab, please contact Brittany Foster (brittanf@andrew.cmu.edu) by April 20th.

Off-Campus Housing Information

For Summer 2026, IT Lab participants have the option to secure their own housing off-campus at their own expense. While university housing is the standard for most of our fellows, we recognize that some students may prefer the flexibility of off-campus living to accommodate family, partners, or existing local leases.

Important Expectations & Accountability

Choosing to live off-campus comes with added responsibility. Please carefully consider the following before opting out of university housing:
  • Financial Responsibility: Students who live off-campus assume all costs associated with their housing, including rent, utilities, and security deposits. CMU/Heinz College will not provide reimbursements or additional funding for off-campus housing.
  • Stipends: Your $2,000 stipend and $1,000 meal allowance remain unchanged regardless of your housing choice.
  • Attendance Policy: Fellows are required to attend all classes, lab sessions, and program events on time. Absences or tardiness due to transportation issues, traffic, or commuting delays will not be excused.
  • Commute Management: You are responsible for your own transportation to and from campus.

Where to Live & How to Commute

We recommend staying within 2–3 miles of campus (Zip Code 15213).

  • Top Neighborhoods: Most students look for rentals in Oakland, Shadyside, and Squirrel Hill.
  • Transit is Free: Your CMU ID card provides free access to all Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) buses. For the easiest commute, look for housing near the 61 or 71 bus lines, which drop off directly at the university.

The CMU Off-Campus Housing Marketplace portal allows you to browse vetted listings specifically for the CMU community.
