Leading at Heinz College
Our Leadership Development Program
At CMU, leadership development is a process by which a student explores themselves as an individual, gains an understanding of how to effectively navigate team and group dynamics, and grows their connection to community. As a student embraces more opportunities and reflects on their journey, they expand their worldview and become increasingly able to facilitate positive, responsible change.
Our leadership development philosophy is guided by the Social Change Model of Leadership which approaches leadership as a purposeful, collaborative, values-based process that results in positive social change. It's built on the following assumptions:
- Leadership is socially responsible, it impacts change on behalf of others.
- Leadership is collaborative.
- Leadership is a process, not a position.
- Leadership is inclusive and accessible to all people.
- Leadership is values-based.
- Community involvement/service is a powerful vehicle for leadership.
We will move through the Heinz Leadership Development Program by exploring three key developmental areas: Individual, Group, and Community.
Individual Leadership Development
Explore and reflect on your own leadership journey. Clarify how your values and experiences influence decisions and relationships through thoughtful and immersive activities. Some of those include Podcast + Ponder, Read + Reflect book discussions, and guest speakers.
Group Leadership Development
Practice how to effectively navigate group dynamics and leverage strengths to work as an effective team through experiential learning opportunities. Some examples include participating in a case competitions, serving on a university or GSA committee, and engaging in group discussions about critical issues.
Community Leadership Development
Explore your role in your communities and how you can make an impact. Community service is a powerful vehicle to practice leadership. Not only is it a requirement of this program, but feedback from our students shows that it is also a highlight!
Interested Heinz College Masters students will opt in to this co-curricular program in CampusGroups by joining the Heinz Leadership Development Program group. The group features a checklist to guide you through options in the program, and it will track your progress. We look forward to growing as leaders together and enhancing your graduate student experience here at Heinz!
