description
The Chinese government set forth an ambitious goal at the dawn of the millennium: it would open 1,500 museums by 2015. But this milestone was quickly surpassed as the reawakened Chinese economy gained momentum. In the decade between 2009 and 2019, the number of museums in China doubled from 2,252 to 5,132. But, as new buildings were opened, sometimes as frequently as one each day, the cultural sector struggled to keep pace with the demand for administrators to staff these institutions. The complexity of conveying five millennia of history is a daunting task, but one that is a priority for the Chinese government as it rebounds from the pandemic. This panel will consider the role and influence of Chinese museums in the global cultural sector. It will explore the relationships between U.S. cultural institutions and their Chinese counterparts, and well as how arts leaders can navigate the return of China to the world stage.
