Is a Master's Degree in Information Systems Management Right For Me?

You need the tools to excel in your career—or to create a new career path entirely. You need a master's degree in Information Systems Management.

The Master of Information Systems Management curriculum equips students with a toolkit that translates far beyond the tech world. Our courses build a foundation for understanding how modern digital infrastructure actually works, giving graduates the fluency to design, evaluate, and lead technology-driven projects in any sector.

Equally important are the decision-making and business-oriented courses, which sharpen your ability to weigh risks, allocate resources, and ground strategies in data. Our leadership instruction ensures graduates can persuade, present and lead teams effectively. Altogether, these skills prepare professionals to bridge the gap between technical systems and organizational goals, a capability that is in demand everywhere from health care and finance to education and criminal justice.

Curriculum & Courses

Core curriculum differs by pathway, as listed below.

Sample information systems management class schedule

At Carnegie Mellon University, courses are counted in units instead of credits. Three units are roughly equivalent to one credit at many of our peer institutions. Nearly all courses in Heinz College are 12 or six units. A semester-long course is 12 units (averaging 12 hours per week of work for the student to be successful in the class), while a half-semester class (called a mini) is six units (still averaging 12 hours per week of work, but for only half the semester, leading to the student earning half the units compared to a full semester course).

The following schedules are intended to be examples of the structure of the semester. Courses may not always be offered in this fashion.

Heinz College offers a mix of full-semester (14 weeks) and half-semester courses (7 weeks) for core and elective courses.
